eBooks Resale Rights Explained

In this article we will investigate the different types of ebooks resale rights available, and we will discuss what these differences mean for you as a buyer or seller.

We will look at Private Label Rights (PLR), Master Resell Rights (MRR) and Standard Resale Rights (SRR).

Each of these ebooks resale rights can also come with its own set of limitations. Every license is different so it is important to check the license of each ebook you buy to establish exactly what you can or cannot do with it.

Private Label Rights (also known as PLR) mean that you get the “source” document included with the ebook (usually the editable word doc). This means that you can change/add/ delete as much content as you wish to the book making it as original as you want. It also means you can claim authorship of the book. You can add affiliate links for products you recommend and links back to your website etc. There is basically no limit as to what you can do with this type of ebook. You can even split the ebook up into smaller pieces to use as content for your blog, to use for a mini-course or for articles.

The benefits of this type of content are that you can edit the ebook to make it more original and you can also include whatever links or promotions you decide. The things to watch for when using PLR content is to make sure that the information contained has not already been widely used if you wish to use it for article marketing or as a blog post unless you are prepared to majorly edit or re-write sections of it. This is because it will be seen as duplicate content by the article site and the article may be rejected. At the very least you will not get good rankings in the search engines by using other peoples material.

However, when intended to be packaged as ebooks for resale, PLR material is definitely the best kind to buy, as you will be able to edit the content with your own links, and make it more original.
You should be aware that even some PLR material has certain restrictions, for example you may not allowed to just give it away (it must be sold for a price) or you cannot sell it on auction sites etc. All licenses will vary so check before you purchase it what the restrictions are. PLR material can be sold as both MRR or SRR which we will talk more about in the next article.

So, where can I find PLR material from?

There are literally hundreds of ways to obtain PLR material, but not all PLR is created equally. There are a few questions you need to ask yourself when sourcing PLR material:

How many other people have the material?

If there are hundreds of people already selling it/giving it away this may be a factor to consider. This is not necessarily to say that you should not try to compete if you can make your version of the ebook better than the competition (for example you could include bonus material such as another ebook or report that other competitors are not offering) You can do some research by typing the name of the ebook you intend to sell in the search box on ebay or on google and seeing what comes up.

Does the ebook come with the promotional material that I will need to sell it?

At the very least this should be the graphics and sales page unless you have the resources/expertise to either purchase or create your own. It would be very difficult to sell an ebook without this material.

Is the ebook of a good enough quality that I would want to put my name to it?

Don’t forget, when you sell an ebook and claim authorship of it, you are putting your brand or personal name to that ebook. If the information contained is unreliable or out of date, this could affect your credibility as a seller.

Are there any limitations to what I can do with this material?

As mentioned earlier you must first check the license to see if there are any limitations as to where/how you can sell the book. Some PLR material has absolutely no limitations whatsoever. Other licenses may restrict you from selling a the ebook on auction sites for example or from giving it away for free.

There are numerous places that you can buy PLR from covering all subjects.

One of the best places to get high quality PLR material that shouldn’t be too widely distributed is the Warrior Forum. There is also an excellent thread on the warrior forum HERE listing hundreds of PLR sites.

Remember that you should look for quality over quantity when choosing a membership site or buying a package of PLR material from ebay. For example there are frequently packages of tens of thousands of ebooks sold on ebay for pennies. However, the majority of this material will be out of date, won’t come with graphics, sales page etc. and may be extremely poor quality. It would take days to trawl through it all to find even one or two items you could use for ebooks resale, and even then, they will probably already be widely distributed.
